Linux on Laptops Report: F7 on Compaq Presario X1010AL

Fedora 7 reached some level of out-of-the-box experience. There are some loss and gains for the X1010AL.

The good news is that the wireless network adapter (ipw2100) is automatically installed and Compiz (Desktop Effects) also runs fine with no extra configuration. The bad news is Suspend-to-RAM and the SD/MMC card reader doesn’t work anymore.

The Firefox builds feels more stable but for some reason Google Gears doesn’t work. Adobe Flash Player installs fine using the GUI on Firefox (no need to fire up a terminal).

Since the X1010AL doesn’t have a DVD drive, you will need to take extra steps (read my workaround). For more information on the X1010AL, see my report for FC6. Personally, I can’t give Fedora 7 a perfect 10 because Suspend-to-RAM is crucial to my daily routines.

Update: CPU frequency scaling works better now. Running on batteries lasts as long as you were on Windows.
