Migrating to Intel

I’ve mentioned here that my desktop is kaput. The motherboard gave up on me. I bought it January 2006 (hardware doesn’t last as long as they used to). It’s a socket 939 AsRock. AsRock is the low-end version of Asus. I like Asus but being impatient and going with 939 was a bad move because socket 940 (AM2) came out the next quarter and prices nosedived to less than half.

Now AMD is phasing out the 939 line and I tried to buy a replacement last week but the store wouldn’t sell it to me without the bundled processor. And that board was an ECS. I hate ECS. I experienced buying three boards by them (K7-VTA3 series) years ago and they all failed.

It’s a bad year for AMD and a very good one for Intel. I think now is the good time to move back to Intel. There’s been a lot of good reviews on Core 2 Duo and 45nm fabrication is a major breakthrough. A lot of analysts say that it will take a couple more months for AMD to switch out of 65nm.

The last Intel processor that went in my hands was an Intel 233MHz. I was an AMD fanboy since I left Intel’s side (where else would one go anyway?).

Can anyone recommend a decent board? I don’t overclock but I want to keep my options open for new technologies and further upgrades. I don’t have SATA drives yet but it should be supported. Linux support should be strong too.

  • I kinda don't trust AsRock anymore. I'll just go for the cheapest Asus board or this 965 MSI.
  • low-end:
    Asrock 4coredual-vsta 3k lang hehehehe.... low-end version of Asus brand mobos daw ito.... it has 2 sata 1 slots, 2 ata133 ports, no firewire, 4 usb 2 slots, 7.1 audio, maximum of 2 gig ddr2 667 mems only,

    another low-end is the msi 965 neo-f 5k.

    =============================
  • I think I'll settle for something low-end for now.
  • I don't need to buy one. because most of what i recommend are good, hehe.. Nabasa ko lang naman sa tipidpc.com... hehehe.... its still upto you kung which one you will invest.. kung office use lang ok na yung msi 965 neo-f (yung lang ang mura na may 1 year future proof, hehe)

    ----------
    My fck mobois alive hahaha.. jumper lang pala ang problem..
  • Okay I get it. Haha! Perfect timing! Bili ka muna tapos testing mo kung ano maganda tapos tsaka na ko bibili. :D
  • mine fck mobo just died, the port for the keyboard and usb port doesn't work anymore, after I change the PSU. kaasar, wala tuloy akong pc....
  • hindi po socket 965, its a socket LGA 775 parin, the 965 is the chipset that intel has made for their motherboard for socket lga775 processors (Pentium 4, Pentium D and Core 2 duo)..

    theres one more that I forgot to add; msi 965 neo-f, it has sata, pci-e 16x ddr2 800 slots... for 5k.. pwede na sya

    or a cheaper mobo na 4coredual-vsta, pci-e 4x lang sya no sata 2 slots and upto ddr2 667 ang supported rams.. for 3k sa pcoptions ko lang ito nakita, in gilmore...
  • Wow ang mahal. Will s775 phased out when this 965 comes out?

    Okay ba yung Asus P5L-MX? Masyadong mahal ang 10-20K for a mobo. Di naman ako hardcore gamer. Paglabas lang ulit ng SCII siguro. But for now, this computer will only be used for like 3-6 hours a week.
  • depends on the budget.....

    10k below, there asus p5b-deluxe, p5b-vanilla, and DFI INFINITY 965-s Dark 8k (solid capacitors et all at this price range) plus a good overclocking board (if you ever wanted to)

    10k up: Asus striker, commando, p5n32-e sli (with nvidia 680i chipset) (priced at 13k), Gigabyte has the same board with nvidia 680i chipset priced at 20k....

    The good time to buy, if you can still wait, is around July 22nd onwards, all Core 2 duo and Quad Core processors would have price cuts.. and new processors would also be introduce, hence price cuts..

    ==============
    OT intel has recently release a new chipset that will support ddr3. watch for it.
