Half A Shutdown Day

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

I was out last night and slept 4ish in the morning. My dad woke me up around 9, read a couple of feeds and Shutdown Day wasn’t in my head at all.

I was asked to attend my sister’s graduation so I went with a high school friend and picked up the rest of the gang. Spent the whole afternoon with them. I even got locked out of the house so we went swimming instead. Had dinner at another friend’s house and reached home about thirty minutes ago.

I wonder how many people forgot that they said they can live a day without their computers (some sort of denial or personal perception)? Don’t look at me, I said I couldn’t.

Novel Spoofs Get-A-Mac Ads

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Sony did the same thing with their Vaio. Now, Novel is riding the bandwagon too.

Honestly, there are more chicks that are hotter out there. They should’ve done the XGL cube on the chick’s head. That would sooooo kick ass! Anyway, I like this one better.

Novel is a sponsor of SuSE, a Linux distribution, and made a deal with Microsoft a few months ago. You can watch the original Get-A-Mac ads here.

Things to Do

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

I have to put up a list, just so I get reminded. This excludes work (so I won’t get caught).

Urgent

  • Two papers for dance class (PETWODA) - tomorrow later
  • Paper for JPRIZAL (a 5-page sequel to El Filibusterismo) - March 27 16.10
  • Clean my room (haven’t cleaned in a month)

Not So Urgent

  • Replace the car’s wiper blades
  • Replace the car’s front suspensions
  • Work out

Can Wait

  • Replace my ~20-year old Marantz amplifier
  • Restring my bass

Indefinite

  • Get a “graduation” picture taken

The LJ Buyout Wasn’t So Baaaad Afterall

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Frank: Baaaah. LJ has a new IM Service!
LJ user: Why would I want another one?
Frank: Because your LJ friends automatically show up in your buddy list & you can post to LJ from it!
LJ user: That sounds so awesome and easy!

LiveJournal (LJ) was bought by Six Apart 2 years ago. Frank is LJ’s mascot (a goat).

Blow Up

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I found a nice remix of Blow Up. A song by my favorite Japanese sax player, Shinji Takeda. I got it off of BitTorrent but due to the fact that the RIAA are assholes that sues poor college kids like me, I can’t give the link. Do your own homework and look for Abstract Jazz Lounge.

Here we have an acid jazz style sampler I grabbed primarily because I tend to buy anything with the Masters At Work involved.

I’ve been playing it alot lately and I figure here’s a good a place to post it as any other.

Its a solid CD with a nice array of styles that I think will appeal to many of you.

I’ve enjoyed it over the years and hopefully you will too.

Unfortunately, the dude that posted this torrent didn’t get to include the DJ/s that did the masterpieces on this sampler.

How did I find out about Shinji Takeda? I took random CDs from my uncle’s flat to listen to at work (when I was at HK). I found “Love Time” and ripped it the moment I heard the first track. If he did more records, I’d definitely buy them.

Hypocrite

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

I haven’t seen 300 but I will blog about it anyway. I’ve heard so many good reviews. I have no money though. So if anyone is willing to trade 300 lines of code for a movie ticket, let me know.

What people said:

  • My boss: Natalo sila pero ang galing nila.
  • Flame: Ayoko nun. Kain na lang tayo.
  • Some gay dude: Binilang ko ang mga papa, di sila 300. 127 lang ang mga Spapartans.
  • Joco: Spartans!!! <gargle gargle>

OR I could just wait for the DVD[rip]. Ha ha ha!

Raising My Geek Cred

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Just to make sure that you don’t get the impression that all I do is play games, I’m starting a new category with geekier stuff. I was hesitant to do this because I’ll be reposting stuff from other sources.

Let me start with something simple. I’ve been playing around with Javascript for more than 5 years already. Okay, maybe not 5 years, I stopped caring about Javascript when I got into college (circa 2003) and moved most of the processing to the server when I learned PHP. AJAX became popular and I’m back to distributing that load.

For those who were used to the pre-DOM/AJAX era, you’ll notice that window.onload or the onLoad event attribute doesn’t work as it used to. This is how it is done for browsers that use Gecko (Firefox et al):

if(document.addEventListener)
document.addEventListener(”DOMContentLoaded”, myFunc, false);

This will call the function myFunc() after the page has loaded.

I wouldn’t want to bore you with more code (in other words, too lazy to type further). For the rest of the browsers and more explanation, you can learn more from here.
