I did that too when I was still using 98SE and changed boot.dat (is that the right file?) and installed other software to make it XP-ish. At that time, I was using a humble machine with Pentium MMX at 200MHz.

I got tired of it and noticed that this new XP look took too much resources. Even in the native XP shell, it took more resources than the “classic” look.

In the end, it’s all marketing. So viral. Good job, Microsoft!
